They call him Skull. He is an angel in disguise

the accident happened
in the darkness
before the sun awakened

it happened to
my best friend
Mike
from high school
we got together
and sang songs
thinking we would become famous
singers someday
I remember singing
lots of songs from the 1960’s

in those days
we loved speeding and
Mike was driving his new car

“this is the car
that will get me dates
with all the girls I want”
he said
you could say I was jealous
of his confidence
and his new car

back then
they called it a heavy foot
that’s when
you are speeding to 60,70, 80
and before long you pinned the
the meter at 120 miles per hour

it was a chevy
not a ford

one morning, still dark,
Mike wanted to see how loud
his car would screem
with his heavy foot

he told me later
after months in the hospital
he was aiming
at 120 miles per hour …
something just got hold of him
and he could not stop

a stop light turned red …
too late to break
his car was hit head on
and the car went into circles,
caught on fire

it happened in front of the
YMCA in Louisville
Mike was unconscious when the
car stopped spinning

a guy with greasy long hair
stopped
he wore a black leather jacket
with the words
“My name is SKULL
I am a proud member
of the Louisville Outlaws”
Skull stopped his motorcycle
parked it,
it leaned heavy toward the left
of the kickstand

Skull ran to the blazing car
jerked the driver’s door
until it opened
and pulled Mike
out of car,
carried Mike in his
large arms until they were
50 feet away from the car

a sound of thunder cracked
through the dead air
the gas tank exploded
the car went into flames

I have lost track of Skull
but Skull, if you read this
please reach out
to me
Mike is still my favorite friend
and we have lunch together
every week here in
Madison, Indiana

Skull, if you read this
Mike and I want you to know
we think about you
every day

As a teen, wanted to live from writing poetry. Wrote several books, selling nationally. Hung out with readers throughout the United States. My writing has been on back burner. Now dusting off my desk and have my pen in hand. Hope you enjoy some of what I write.

    1. Hello Marilyn, thank you for you kind and very insightful comments. It’s nice to know there is someone out there reading my poems. God has provided protection in my life so often I could write a short book about how my life has been saved time after time.

    2. Hello Marilyn, I should write a lot more about God and his angels in my life. Thanks for your encouragement and I promise to tell more stories of how God has been running along with me over all these years. Warmly, Jim Wortham

    1. Hi Mike, would that be you who eats with me each week? Yes, I think you are the guy. Don’t get into any more wrecks, okay? It’s hard on this old man. Blessings to you, my best friend, Jim Wortham
